IELTS band scores

IELTS is scored from 0 to 9, with half bands. Here is what each band means and how it maps to CEFR.

You receive a band score for each section (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking), and an overall band score, which is the average of the four, rounded to the nearest whole or half band.

Half bands (such as 6.5 or 7.5) are awarded. Your IELTS results remain valid for two years from the test date.

The IELTS band scale

  • Band 9, Expert user. Has fully operational command of the language with complete accuracy and fluency.
  • Band 8, Very good user. Fully operational command with only occasional unsystematic inaccuracies.
  • Band 7, Good user. Operational command, occasional inaccuracies, handles complex language well.
  • Band 6, Competent user. Generally effective command despite some inaccuracies and misunderstandings.
  • Band 5, Modest user. Partial command of the language, copes with overall meaning in most situations.
  • Band 4, Limited user. Basic competence limited to familiar situations.
  • Band 3, Extremely limited user. Communicates only general meaning in very familiar situations.
  • Band 2, Intermittent user. Great difficulty understanding spoken and written English.
  • Band 1, Non-user. Essentially no ability to use the language beyond a few isolated words.
  • Band 0, Did not attempt the test.

IELTS and the CEFR

The Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) describes language ability on a scale from A1 (beginner) to C2 (mastery). IELTS aligns broadly with these levels so universities, employers and immigration authorities can compare scores across different qualifications.

IELTS to CEFR (approximate)

  • CEFR C2, Proficient. IELTS 8.5 to 9.0.
  • CEFR C1, Effective operational proficiency. IELTS 7.0 to 8.0.
  • CEFR B2, Independent (upper). IELTS 5.5 to 6.5.
  • CEFR B1, Independent (lower). IELTS 4.0 to 5.0.
  • CEFR A2, Basic (upper). IELTS 3.0 to 3.5. (Indicative)
  • CEFR A1, Basic (lower). IELTS below 3.0. (Indicative)

Always check the minimum IELTS band (and CEFR equivalent) required by your university, professional body or immigration authority before you book.
